A little about me, for those who may not know.
I’m 40 years old and am currently the healthiest that I’ve ever been. I was not always like this, in fact looking back its hard to imagine I was so unhealthy for such a major part of my life.
I was first aware that I was overweight when I was in the second grade. At that age I have no idea what got me to that point but I know the comments from friends and family didn’t help me at all.
It shouldn’t be the responsibility of a child to try to figure out what to do about being overweight and I of course had no idea at all, so I just continued to accept things as they were.
This continued and became worse as the years went by. The only thing that was different is people seemed to put more responsibility on me for figuring out how to lose weight. Countless ideas of drink 8 glasses of water every day, just get out and walk more, eat less, stop eating, and when I asked my doctor for help on what to do, I was handed a stack of papers on a calorie restrictive diet and was expected to figure it out on my own with no further discussion.
It wasn’t until after going through cancer that caused me to become blind, problems requiring me to have carpal tunnel surgery on both hands, becoming diabetic, having high cholesterol and slowly my health getting worse that I found something that would turn my life around.
I heard about Gastric Bypass Surgery on a local news / radio station and the experience that this lady had and how it changed her life.
I looked into options, went to a seminar at a local hospital and knew this is the change I need and something I must do to try to do something about my health.
What it all comes down to was the right education from people who actually wanted to help me. Talking with people who have gone through some of the same things that I have and people who had become healthier.
There is a wonderful organization that focuses on this and they provide education, help, and resources to help you on your journey from obesity to a healthier and happier life.
Your Weight Matters
Presented by Obesity Action Coalition
They have their second annual convention coming up in August 2013 in Phoenix, Arizona. This is an excellent chance to meet with others who have been where you are, people who are at the same place that you are, and people who want to offer good information on ways to help you make a change.
I would be attending this convention but it just isn’t possible right now. If you are able to go I highly encourage you to do so. You’ll meet with wonderful people and make connections with those who have the helpful information that just wasn’t around when I was younger.
Here’s more information about the convention and if for some reason you aren’t able to attend either, at least consider becoming a member of the OAC and take part in all of the amazing information and resources on their web site.
